Milk is the best source for calcium right? WRONG!! While it is on this list (I don’t drink milk FYI) there are many better sources for getting it. Are all Calories equal when losing weight?

A calorie is a calorie right? Calories in VS calories out is all you have to think about when losing weight, at least that’s what I heard. These 2 statements do have some truth to them, depending on where you are in your weight loss journey. Let me explain.

Many people have a very bad diet. As a believer in the power of fruits and vegetables to give the body what it needs to heal and fight viruses, disease, etc, I am the first to say yes, we need a diet rich in whole food. That is the ultimate goal. Getting to that ultimate goal is where it can be fuzzy when talking about calories.

I have heard health and wellness people talk emphatically that there is no middle ground with calories. They are NOT created equal and we need to make sure when anyone is looking to lose weight, eating as healthy as possible is all that matters. This is where, with my 25 years experience, I have noticed we lose so many who need our help.

Weight loss, for most, is a journey that can take a year, and sometimes more, to really make an impact to where they want to continue on with the hard work. Along that journey, the key is to get people to change from bad habits to good ones. For example, if an individual starts off their day with a trip to the bakery and they have 2 donuts every morning, one thing that would make a HUGE impact is to reduce the 2 donuts to 1. This will do a couple of things. You reduce bad calories by half AND you can still enjoy some of that bad habit. The calories that person is getting is still from a donut however there are fewer. As it is a journey, it is always good to gradually make the changes necessary to see results. Where so many get derailed is they go from a bad diet to the perfectly healthy diet. They start to think they can’t keep that up the rest of their life so they simply quit, not taking into consideration there is a lot of room in between where improvement can be made.

As you start to make those small changes and allow your body to adjust, you keep improving and eventually focusing on where the calories are coming from. Changing 3 mornings a week from 1 donut to a protein shake or piece of fruit is an incredible change and something that may not seem so unattainable since the changes were gradual.

One thing I stress with those with a big weight loss goal is you can’t go back to the bad diet that got you into the situation you are in, HOWEVER you don’t have to be perfect! Start making better choices and I guarantee you will see results!
