We can do better for our young athletes!

Even at 58 years old, I still have wonderful memories of playing youth sports. We always did the cycle of soccer, basketball, and baseball in CYC. Our teams were never very good, but it was more about being with school friends and the camaraderie that we shared. Those sunny afternoons, the sound of cleats on the pavement, and the thrill of competition made for some of the best times of my childhood.

When it came to fueling my game, I admit I didn’t think too much about it. We certainly didn’t have the food options offered at a Quick Trip, for example. Those were simpler times, and the concept of nutrition wasn’t as prominent in our minds as it is today. I remember stopping in a QT one Saturday morning for a coffee and noticing a kid in a baseball uniform with his dad. They were probably off to a game or day tournament, and he was getting “fuel.” This included a slice of pizza, a couple of candy bars, and a large soda.

Now, if this was just a kid on a Saturday morning with some friends getting junk food, I could understand. It’s a treat, and kids love indulging in those kinds of satisfying snacks. However, when fueling for game day, it should ideally look a little different to maximize performance. The right kind of nourishment can make a significant difference in how a young athlete plays, both physically and mentally. Healthy carbohydrates, lean proteins, and hydration should be priorities to support endurance and sharpness on the field.

I’m not here to judge. I wish I had JUICE PLUS when I was young to supplement the normal teen diet of pizza and chips. That is the beauty of youth; we learn as we grow. Equipped with today’s knowledge about nutrition, today’s young athletes have the chance to enhance their performance in ways that many of us didn’t even consider during our playing days. It’s about not just playing a sport but also understanding how to take care of your body to perform at your best. Embracing good nutrition early on can set a strong foundation for a healthier lifestyle that carries well beyond the playing fields.

Until next time…
