That is the mantra of bicyclist. Unfortunately for many of those riders (some I happened to meet this morning) those in cars should respect their right to be on the road but they don’t have to follow the rules. Or pick and choose when they apply.
As I do most mornings, I was heading to Jefferson Barracks for my walk. At a stop light there were 4 or 5 cars waiting for the light to turn green when a group of about 10 bicyclists came up behind and decided that light didn’t apply to them, went around all the cars and through the light. When they were part of the way through, the light changed so they were in the middle of the road instead of behind all the cars, where they should have been. I had a few choice words with them and one of them yelled the magical phrase … “SHARE THE ROAD”. This is exactly why drivers have disdain for bicyclists. I’ll be honest, I needed a few extra steps this morning to calm down.
I enjoy riding a bike and am on the road from time to time so I understand wanting to utilize the car lanes. However, I always follow the rules of the road and that means waiting for lights to change, even behind cars. Too many times I see cyclists picking and choosing what road rules they want to follow and that, understandably, irritates most drivers, myself included!
These things never end well. Yes, I used my words this morning to voice my disapproval. However, the next person that group of riders come across may take more drastic measures.
I you are going to cry “share the road” be sure that you are doing what you should be to have that respect.
