I just turned 51. Before you say it, I know I don’t look like I am even close to that age! 🙂 I try to live a healthy lifestyle, while realizing it isn’t perfect. If you go back to many of my posts here, I talk of my love of burgers and pizza and dislike of ultra- light and light beers (they just aren’t beer). I finished grade school in 1982, graduated high school in 1986 and college, well, that’s complicated.
I say all this to talk about allergies. When I was in grade school, everyone ate together at lunch and gladly exchanged the food we brought from home with a friend who had something that looked better. If I remember correctly, we had to raise our hands and ask permission but it was usually granted. We didn’t have tables set aside for the kids who were allergic to a certain food. When our birthday came around, we were able to bring in homemade cupcakes to share with the rest of the class. Ah, the good ole days!
Fast forward to today. When I did a short stint as a middle school PE teacher, I remember the beginning of the school year, being taught how to administer an epi-pen to students who would need it. The school nurse spent a lot of time getting all the epi pens organized for those MANY students who needed them…actually their lives depended on it. There were lunch tables set aside for those with allergies, and had to be cleaned with special cleaners. Again, all this had to be done because allergies have become deadly!
There is a question I don’t think is being asked, and that is why are peanuts all of a sudden deadly to children?? We are dealing with this with the pens and so forth but getting to the root of it, I think, is key!
I am not an anti-vaccination person, however, when I look back to the few vaccinations I had to get as a kid, compared to how many kids get now, I do wonder if there is a connection. I wonder if there is a connection to how food is grown, what is put into processed foods, how much junk kids put in their bodies, how “energy drinks” affect us…the list goes on. During my 16 years sharing Juice Plus, and listening to countless doctors talk about the immune system, along with the stories of people making amazing changes in their health with diet, it is clear to me that immune systems have become compromised in some way. Is it really that peanuts are so different that having just a little dust from peanuts a child picks up from a table can somehow kill them? I would love to know how much money is spent on epi pens today compared to 20-30 years ago. Should we not question this and see what exactly is going on?
There is a lot more money to be made from illness than from health, we all know that. I don’t think parents, kids , teachers and so forth are doing anything wrong, we are just fed a steady diet of this is the norm now and we have to deal with it with meds. The good news is, there is another way! Just keep asking questions and making changes in your lifestyle that are positive!
Until next time…
