Workout Mistakes —- Part 1

There are many mistakes people make when starting/continuing a workout program. In my time as a trainer, I have tried to help people overcome these mistakes, as many come from the health and fitness community. Most sound reasonable but some can be confusing as there is different information out there. Here are a few that I have found people miss the boat on.

SKIPPING THE WARMUP — I have been guilty of this in the past but as I have put a few more years under my belt, I found that it is crucial to do a warmup before a workout. This could be a simple jog to get the blood flowing, especially if you get your workout in first thing in the morning.

STRETCHING PRIOR TO WORKOUT — Yes, stretching is very important AFTER you do your workout. As stated above, a warmup is important, however if you do a stretching routine before getting to the strenuous workout, you can leave yourself open to an injury.

INADEQUATE NUTRITION — I would see this when training someone after they get off work or in the morning. There is some studies that show working out on an empty stomach can help you burn more fat. The results of studies are mixed, but what you miss out on is the energy from the food. I don’t recommend working out after a full meal but a piece of fruit before working out can add a lot to your performance which will ultimately help you burn more calories.

NOT GETTING ENOUGH SLEEP — This can be detrimental to a lot of your day to day activities but if you short yourself on sleep before a workout you will not be as sharp.

OVER TRAINING — This can go along with not getting enough sleep. If you are training for a big event, you probably feel you have to get every bit of workout it. This is true but you can easily overdo the training, which can lead to injury or even illness.

TRAINING WHILE INJURED — Again, this goes along with the above. Some will power through an injury and get away with it…at least for a while. Many times you will just make that injury worse and have to take more time off.

While working out is essential for our health, there are many ways you can hinder the benefits. Using common sense can help so much! You know what your body is telling you so listen to it and get the most from your routine!
