“Healthcare” in the USA

Thats right…I’m going there.  The hot button topic in politics.  Where to draw the line in providing insurance and what should be allowed is something that will be argued for a long time to come.

What I am going to say is this…it really doesn’t matter.  Having health insurance is not going to do anything to better the health of the population in the United States until everyone takes it upon themselves to better their own health.  This is a concept that is lost on a lot of people and can make the biggest impact on the cost of providing healthcare or getting coverage on your own.  The statistics are out there…most disease can be directly related back to poor diet and lack of exercise.  Let me say that again.  Most disease can be directly related back to poor diet and lack of exercise.  Look at what all the big health organizations are saying right on their brochures…American Heart association, diabetes, cancer.  To better your chances at not getting these diseases you need to eat more fruits and vegetables and exercise.  Those of you who know me know how I feel about getting fruits and vegetables into your diet.   That is the reason I have been a big proponent of Juice Plus for the last 10 years.  The power of what we put in our bodies can either build us up to incredible health or tear us down to debilitating disease.  This is certainly not to say that just because we eat healthy and exercise we will never get sick but what you have to think about is giving your body what it needs to fight disease and illness.  There is not a drug out there that is more powerful than what we get from fruits and vegetables.  Don’t get me wrong.  I feel there is a tremendous need for prescribed drugs but I also feel there has to be just as much  promotion givin to having a healthy diet and exercise.

We each have to make that decision on our own.  What kind of quality of life do we want.  I have said this before and you will continue to hear it again from me.  You don’t have to be a vegetarian and a professional athlete to be healthier.  As a friend/client of mine, who is a retired heart surgeon, says…if people who are sedentary and have poor eating habits only knew that if you just get up and go for a walk and change out a candy bar for an apple, you have just increased your health dramatically.  I would be much happier with the discussion of healthcare in this country if as much time was givin to making sure we are all accountable for our health.  Even if you think it is too expensive to provide insurance for yourself and your family, you always have control over what you put in your mouth and how much exercise you get.  Accountability.

The difference between healthy and “fit”

For a long time I have felt that the health and fitness industry is its own worst enemy.  Look at any “health” magazine and what you see is a guy with his shirt off with rippling muscles and/or a gal with a half shirt and  much the same.  The point to these pictures, in my opinion, is that you have to look like that in order to be healthy.  This is what we are fed as the look of health and fitness.  Don’t get me wrong, that all looks good but one thing I will go to the mat on is just because someone spends more hours in the gym, that is not directly related to being healthier.

Hear me out.  I am NOT saying don’t spend time in the gym.  It is necessary to exercise in order to be healthy.  I do take issue with men or women spending hours a day at the gym.  I am a believer in exercise should be a part of your life but it shouldn’t take over your life.

Ultimately, I don’t tell people how to live their life.  If you want to spend all that time in the gym more power to you.  What I believe is you don’t have to spend all your spare time exercising to be healthy. Exercise, eat your fruits and vegetables, watch your weight and visit your doctor to keep those number checked.

Incredible accomplishments at the Olympics!

I don’t know about you but I was continuously amazed by what these athletes were able to accomplish.  10,000 meter open water swim, marathon, weightlifting, gymnastics, pinpoint diving and the list goes on and on.

I consider myself very much an amateur athlete and I think I do quite a bit to stay in the shape I am in.  We look at these athletes and think that we could never look like they do.  This may sound strange but that is probably correct!  They train hour upon hour to get stronger and faster because that is what they do for a living.  Here is the secret…studies have shown that we don’t have to do nearly that much in order to be healthy and fit.

Point being, don’t compare yourself to an olympic athlete.  That is simply not being fair to you.  Eat right, exercise and watch those numbers and you should be good.
